in the year since i.g. culture's main squeeze label put out its first
cd, a compilation called family planning, the music from these dollis
hill area innovators has had a rather unspoken but profound influence
on the styles of electronic/dance music being produced in locations as
diverse as germany, detroit, philadelphia, japan, jupiter, and mars.
one change has been to largely render the sampled vocal or instrument
loop obsolete with a return to actual instrument playing and singing
in a way which hasnt been seen since many of the funk and soul classics
from the 1970s. the other main influence which has fanned out through-
out the world has been the return to experimentation in rhythm which
has not been seen since drum&bass became formulaic about 5 years ago.
numbers is demus, co-op regular and part of 2 banks of 4, with vocal
talents from carlene anderson and valerie etienne. as the first artist
album on mainsqueeze, numbers sets a high standard which will likely be
continued, possibly with albums from son of scientist or da one away.
