Skylab, like most of the more adventurous, electronically-based
musical projects that have surfaced lately, is the collaboration
between a scant few non-traditional musician types: sound-wiz Matt
Ducasse, Japanese DJ duo Major Force and renowned producer/artist
Howie B (whose resume includes work with Tricky and Massive
Attack). The sound that this collective sculpts has been best
described as music for an imaginary film-a surreal, at times
frightening and frequently abstract one. It's impressionistic,
certainly, but the kind of aural shapes that float, bob and flutter
across #1's expanse are unique to the genres of ambient, dance or
trip-hop, any of which could describe the record. There are moments
of ghostly beauty here: luxurious passages of looped melody,
caressed and softened by vocal and jazz samples; faintly-outlined
experiments with percussion, found sounds and icy silence; organic
guitar textures bent, refracted and oddly-tinged by alien
digitizations. As much as this type of free-form composition begs
to be dismissed as background sound or unapproachable experiments,
Skylab's creation holds together as a finely detailed series of
passages that evoke as much haunting emotion as they do
technological wonder. While it's basically one long, shifting
piece, the album's more active moments include "Seashell,"
     "Electric Blue". --cdnow.com
