like the excellent all back to mine series obsessive's abstract
funk theory discs provide a great way to save years of scouring
second hand shops by sampling the very essence of a dj on one
easily storable piece of silicon. it's always nice to add a few
obscure gems to the collection and this really saves you the
effort of looking.
previous participants in the series include carl cox, freddy fresh
and mixmaster morris. this time out it's the lee brothers, robin
and simon, a.k.a. faze action, who supply the tracklisting,
filling in time until they get round to following their 1999 album
moving cities.
for faze action's turn at offering an aft, it seems important that
there's as much reference to space and astronomy as possible just
in case we don't get the message that these guys are, like, so out
there. witness the ethereal soul majesty of james vincent's space
traveller, mandre's jazz funk opus light years and johnny
"hammond" smith's pan-galactic interstellar black dwarf-gobbling
wah-wah wigathon star borne.
much has been made recently of french electronic pioneers space
who made disco heaven with magic fly in the seventies -
effectively a prototype for air. their introductory offering carry
on, turn me on will have you searching out the reissues - or the
original vinyl if you want real kudos.
where faze action would like to see you dancing in outer space -
to coin a phrase - this is actually more like barbeque music,
chilled stuff but bouncy enough to get a few hips jiggling. the
siblings have effectively given us a blueprint for their fluid,
contemporary take on disco and, bar the inexplicably duff sandman
from soul also-rans undisputed truth, this is a fine testament to
their head-space, man.
