Tijuana Mon Amour Broadcasting Inc. are Matthias Macht
(Drums), Heiko Schramm (Bass), Thomas Heil (Turntables,
Sampler) and Matthias Petzold (Keyboards, Guitar, Vocals).
Based in Dresden/Germany, the band has released three albums
so far ("s/t" (Hobby Deluxe, 2003), "Songs" (Hobby Deluxe,
2003) and "Day After Night Before (Doxa, 2004)), three albums
of which the latter was a critically acclaimed remix album,
featuring artists like CCO's very own Herrmann & Kleine. Over
the course of the years, the band constantly toured Europe and
received raving reviews. German indie-mag SPEX described their
music as the "german heritage of Tortoise", INTRO saw them
successfully bridging the gap between incompatible styles and
STYLE & THE FAMILY TUNES saw their success in the the fact
that they are fishing far from any stereotype in a slow yet
innovative river of sound. However, TMAB's music was always
more than that.
Deeply rooted in a love for instrumental, postrock-driven
sound, the band successfully integrated electronic sound
design, samples and turntable scratches and experiments into
their sound, making their music a melting pot of styles and
genres, attracting fans from pop, indie, jazz, dance, even
classical camps.
Cold Jubilee (Of The Snowqueen)
More than two years in the making, "Cold Jubilee" marks a
turning point in the band's history. For the first time ever,
TMAB add lyrics to their instrumental kingdom. "Living In The
Future" is the first example of this new approach. "We've been
making music for quite some time now", says Matthias Petzold.
"You suddenly realize the urge to acuminate your musical
ideas. For once, you want to really bring across what you want
to express, what you want to say". Adding a well-versed voice
to their musical vision, "Cold Jubilee" flows better than
ever, despite the fact that flow has always been the core of
TMAB's sound. Heavily influenced by film scores in general and
by the aspiration to merge sound and images (and vice versa)
in particular, the members of the band always have images in
their heads when writing and recording music. "For the new
album? Well, it should definitely be widescreen", says Heiko
Schramm. "When we listen back to the record, we think about
landscapes and how one can drown in these landscapes, about
how people suddenly appear in front of you and start telling
you weird storys." "Cold Jubilee" takes you on an emotional
rollercoaster which has yet to be build. The open-hearted,
piano-based "88" combines the simplicity of Wim Mertens'
melodies with a jazz drummer's early morning lullaby, "On Top
Of The Mountain" hits you with a hypotic bassline from Chicago
with irritating yet assuring vocal samples, while tracks like
"Day After", "Time Now" or "Dead Bill" are at the centre of
the "new" Tijuana Mon Amour Broadcasting Inc.: showcasing
Petzold's vocals on top of the finest tracks the band ever
wrote. "Cold Jubilee (Of The Snowqueen)" is the perfect
companion for times when time does not matter.
