FAMILY
Lee "Andy's family have known about his musical desires from a very
young age. He's a really talented pianist and has studied music all
his life. He's classically trained so his family have always backed
him in the music thing. My family really wanted me to do something
else, feeling that music wasn't a consistent thing to get into. I was
playing the guitar at school but I got into other stuff, architecture
and buildings. When the building industry collapsed in '95 there were
no jobs so I was promoting and DJing. That's how I got back into
music, which was my first love. I think both our parents are slightly
bewildered by what modern dance music is and what we do. But we
sorted that out by taking them to fabric, which was quite good fun.
They got to experience Room 1 from the DJ booth at 2 in the morning.
There were mixed initial comments, I think Andy's mum thought
everyone would be really good at dancing because when she grew up
everyone did proper dancing. Now people stand and throw their arms
around so she was a bit bewildered by that. My dad thought it was
like a football match, my mum loved the energy of the night and I
think they all now have a better appreciation of it. It seemed a bit
weird at the time but the result is we now have both of our families
rooting for us."
MUSICAL ROOTS
Lee "We are both a similar age and we enjoyed similar sorts of music
although we never met. We shared the same sort of musical
progression. It started with disco at a very young age, the sort of
things our parents were playing at parties. Growing up in the 80's
past the age where you listen to your parents music it was pop
through to hip hop. We were both into hip hop from a really young age
and that led on to dance music for us both. We got into house music
quite heavily when it kicked off at the end of the 80's and that's
what we were partying to. Then we went off it when it got all glam
and cheesy. That revived our early interest in hip hop and I was
promoting one of the early breakbeat nights in London, Freshly
Breaked. It was about the same time the whole big beat thing kicked
in and we were programming The Freestylers, Ali B, Tayo and that,
before they were doing anything at all. That's when Andy and I met
because I got him to DJ as Cut N Paste when he was working at
Freskanova."
FIRST PROJECTS
Lee "We got together in 97 after being introduced by Matt Cantor from
the Freestylers. We met Steve Blonde (fabric, head of promotions) and
changed Freshly Breaked to Passenger. Me and Andy were friends
initially then Andy played me a tune one day and asked if I fancied
doing a remix, so we created the Plump DJs. The first remix we did
together through Freskanova wasn't blinding but got a few nods from
people we respected at the time. We kept our heads down, did a couple
of dodgy remixes, but then started finding our feet and that's when
we took the new tracks to Finger Lickin'. It all started there."
LABELS & PRODUCTION
Lee "When we went to Finger Lickin' we had a meeting with Justin
Rushmore. He's got a really good head on him when it comes to music.
He said some things about what we were doing and basically made us
realise a few things about where we were going and helped us along
the way. I've not been classically trained or trained in music at
all, so I've had to pick it all up. Andy does most of the programming
but we basically find all the component parts together."
DJING
Lee "Andy had decks quite early. I only bought mine last year, I
thought it was about time. I learnt on Matt's (The Freestylers) decks
and pissed him off for an entire summer going round to see him, for
his decks upstairs! I would be up there for hours and he would just
go out. To be honest there isn't much to it, once you've spent a
whole summer getting your head round it then it's like riding a bike.
You don't need a bike to know that you can ride one. You need an
understanding of how tunes are put together. No one can be expected
to know that from birth, you need to be taught. It's amazing; when I
first went into the studio with Andy he was pointing out rudimentary
things to me. 'This is a high hat, and this is a kick drum' he'd say,
and I was like 'oh yeah. I wondered what that noise was'. It's just
an education."
FABRIC
Lee "They're a nice bunch, there's a lot of love there. We get
treated so well when we come down. We've been playing for a year and
a bit. We started doing the main room thing at the beginning of the
year. We played a couple of times in Room 3 at first with Finger
Lickin'. Now it feels like home."
THE FUTURE
Lee "We are polishing off our album at the moment, it's coming out on
Finger Lickin' Records in the summer. We're play at the
Transmusicales Festival in France in December, Hong Kong for
Christmas and Australia over New Year with a 17,000 crowd on New
Years day. Then we stop at Singapore on the way back. We've got a few
of our new tracks on the FABRICLIVE compilation and our Mr Velcro
Fastener remix with some exclusives from Lee Coombs, Meat Katie and
Soul Of Man. We are launching it with a gig at the club in February
that we are really looking forward to. There should also be a US and
European tour around our artist album launch next summer. We are
looking forward to a good year in 2003 with our continued FABRICLIVE
residency and other nights."
