Josh Pyke's recent support slot with Scott Matthews may
give the uninitiated some idea of his sound. It's a little
more put together than Matthews', who seems to revel in
confusing listeners as to when his songs begin and end.
However, this is not to say that Australian Pyke's
slightly more conventional writing style is bland or
boring - certainly, new single 'Middle Of The Hill'
couldn't be further from this description.
'Middle Of The Hill' is a gentle but hugely enjoyable
indie tune that bounds along at a mid-tempo pace,
practically forgetting to take a pause for breath as Pyke
pours out his memories through the medium of song.
Lyrically a little long in the tooth, being able to sing
this song clearly necessitates having a good memory and an
ability to multi-task on the guitar whilst recalling all
the incredibly descriptive verses!
Josh Pyke is still pretty unknown in the UK. Although his
music, like that of touring partner Matthews, doesn't look
set to crash into people's consciousnesses like snap, if
he can keep up the standard of musicality shown on 'Middle
Of The Hill', he might just have a chance at the big time.
