     Claude Frank's Beethoven sonata cycle is definitely the best
     investment any music lover or pianist can make. In all three
     compositioanl periods (early, middle, late), Mr. Frank
     captures the essence of the Beethovenian spirit. Also, he
     masterfully chooses to create 10 different Beethoven sonata
     recitals instead of using 10 CDs to play the sonatas in
     chronological order. This way, every CD has at least one
     sonata from every period (except for the CD with the
     Hammerklavier sonata, which is understandable, considering the
     Hammerklavier's length). If you're looking for a chronological
     sequence in the CD set, then this isn't the box set to
     purchase.

     One cannot resist comparing Mr. Frank's renditions with those
     of his teacher, the incomparable Artur Schnabel. One would
     find that Mr. Frank listened closely to Mr. Schnabel on how to
     play, sing and voice those slower movements. However, Mr.
     Frank performs the outer movements with the energy and
     excitement of Mr. Schnabel, but without the excessive rubatos
     and wrong notes.

     The best quality about this cycle is in the humanity of the
     performances. As we all know, Beethoven was an exciting, yet
     sloppy pianist. Mr. Frank's performances aren't scraped
     perfectly clean of missed notes and misplaced fingers in large
     chords. Yet his mistakes seem to add a sense of realism to the
     set that most sets on the market do not have.
