His name is David Mancuso. He had a profound influence on DJs such
as Tony Humphries, Francois Kerkovian, Frankie Knuckles, Larry
Levan, David Morales, Larry Patterson, Nicky Siano and Danny
Tenaglia. His loft formula, which dates back to 1970, has inspired
the Tenth Floor, the Gallery, the Soho, Reade Street, the Paradise
Garage and the Warehouse. Yet for all of the countless column
inches dedicated to the history of the American DJ, Mancuso's
legacy remains unwritten. Welcome to the myopic world of dance
music, where 'now' and 'next' rule supreme and the 'past' rarely
gets beyond tabloid mythology.

This is a classy collection of tunes that defined what Disco and
House would become. For Funky Disco lovers, this compilation is
essential. If you normally find disco to be cheesy, these tracks,
once anthems of David Mancuso's, resident DJ at the legendary Loft
nightclub in New York, may change your mind.
Tracks range from the Jazz/Funk of War and Dexter Wansel to the
Afro grooves of Manu Dibango, to the proto-House of Mr. Fingers
(Larry Heard). Similar in status to the Paradise Garage in terms of
developing the original house sound, The Loft has long disappeared,
leaving a strong musical history in it's wake. This compilation
provides an archive as well as butt-shakin' grooves.
