it won't surprise you, on hearing the first a couple of bars, that
'transcend me' found a fan base in such left luminaries as
jazzanova, gilles peterson and 4 hero as soon as it appeared on
cd-r.
the face behind afronaught is some time phil asher collaborator,
fomer monkey funk label honcho and hustlers of culture dj, orin
walters.
here off kilter jazz beats nudge under classic jazz vocals and
electric piano lines, delivered through sharp production that holds
back enough to allow complexity, while building enough through a
sprinkling of keyboard washes to imply a sense of euphoria.
on the instrumental flip side electro beats mutate into an equally
off the wall equation. keyboard stabs are twisted into a cacophony
of competing ear liquidating effects, transforming something that
could have been an easy dance floor number into something far
stranger.
next century this will be staple radio fodder.
roll on 2101.
