Contained, though pulsating, a guitar sketch makes its way
through warm feedback sounds and shivery drones; at times
expanding, at others retracting. Accompanied by unobtrusive
organ harmonies and a voice that welcomes us on our 40-minute
     journey through PendlerÆs debut album.

     ôYou come to me ...ö

For the finishing touches to their album äyou come to meàö,
musicians Sabine Marte, feminist video and performance artist
(ôSV Damenkraftö), Markus Marte, guitarist and scapewriter,
and Oliver Stotz (ôGround Liftö, ôLe Charmant Rougeö) took
their time. Because working together across geographical
distances may not be easy, but it has had a discernible effect
on their music and ultimately also given the band, who have
joined the Viennese family Karate Joe, its name (ôPendlerö
     meaning ôcommuterö).

However, ôPendlerö, ôcommuterö, does not only stand for the
physical conquest of stretches, but also for the musical
transformation of previously traditional structures and
     instrumentation into the bandÆs very own musical microcosm;
defined by a digital reworking of base material and the
creation of ambivalences and blurs, especially with regards to
their handling of the popcultureÆs legacy.

For example, in ôGood Jobö, inspired by the redneck-(n)
evergreen ôProud Maryö, the original is rid off its pseudo-
liberating breakup moment and consequently torn up in such a
way that the aspect of ôleft a good job in the cityö becomes a
statement of deep despair and takes centre stage. However,
such textual distortions, which are often meant humorously, as
a bow before Buster Keaton or the Charlie Chapin of ôMonsieur
Verdouxö rather than simply out of joy for the deconstruction
of the category ôsongö, make up just one aspect of PendlerÆs
     music.

The visual component plays a crucial part in PendlerÆs
universe. Live and on-stage, the screen is transformed into an
extended stage and becomes a cut-surface on which the songs
merge with or rub against synchronised video clips.
Consequently, the music of the ôtest arrangement of peopleö,
as Pendler refer to themselves, while equipped with a certain,
undeniable pop appeal, remains somewhere between song and
soundtrack, Lo-Fi Americana and psychedelectronic soundscapes,
between the directly uttered and the consciously heard. And it
is exactly this in-between nature which makes this gem shine
beyond the moment when the absurdly quirky last song ôSchrei-
     benö impressively draws the curtain.
