Perhaps it's a little bit anal, and in today's
download-driven world of decreasing importance, but a
single or album cover can still influence buying choices.
This is indeed the case for Sophie Ellis-Bextor's latest
release æMe And My Imagination', which has a very
simplistic, but totally gorgeous cover shot of Ms
Ellis-Bextor glistening with gold stars, lips just parted
enough to entice. The whole thing is slightly ethereal but
beautiful, and if you are influenced by how lazy or
sensible an artist has been about picking the cover shot
for their release, you may well take a second look at this
song.
That's quite enough on the mechanics of cover shots - what
about the song itself? Well, Ellis-Bextor's voice is one
of the few unique female vocal talents around at the
moment. Not quite on a par with Kate Bush or Joni
Mitchell, Ellis-Bextor nevertheless has a wonderfully arch
quality to her voice that most other artists of her ilk
lack. Slightly aloof but delicious to listen to, her voice
once more blends nicely with the dance-pop vibe new single
æMe And My Imagination' gives off.
It is to be hoped that Ellis-Bextor's protracted break
from the music industry is not to be repeated for some
time at least. Although it's difficult for female singers
to make their mark in the bloke-fronted indie-dominated
charts currently, Ellis-Bextor's brand of sophisticated,
memorable pop is a good few steps ahead of any of the
competition.
