from a cult dj who acted as a touch- stone for london's dance
community from the early 80's, gilles peterson's status has since
progressed to receiving a prestigious gold sony radio award this
month for his worldwide show on radio one, officially recognising
his position as one of the most important djs around today.
ironically the 15 year old boy broadcasting from his parents shed
who wanted to be the next robbie vincent is now seen as the new
john peel, an arbiter of taste with a passion for music that
refuses to be limited by musical boundaries.
worldwide is broadcast on wednesday evenings from midnight till
2am, fusing sounds from around the globe, and is dedicated to the
promotion and nurturing of new music. the programme's content
mirrors the melting pot of musical genres by consistently
representing live music, artist and record label focuses, live dj
mixes and guest appearances. on a global scale gilles peterson is
the most widely heard british dj thanks to worldwide being the
world's most syndicated dance music programme.
directly reflecting the show's musical diversity, the compilation
features tracks from new artists as well as established stalwarts,
making the connections between r&b, latin, jazz, hip-hop, dub,
spaced-out electonica, rare groove, twisted house, folk and funk.
many of these tracks which are extremely rare or
never-before-released.
best leave it to gilles to explain some of the tracks ...
gotan project 'el capitalismo foraneo' *
this is a perfect worldwide song in that it combines music from
different cultures with a contemporary post-dance beat, ie in this
case fusing argentinian tango with sub dub.
jill scott 'slowly'
this was passed onto me 6 months ago by friend kenny dope. he's my
new york connection and always gives me upfront tapes so they get
their first uk airplay on worldwide. jill scott is produced by
jazzy jeff and i believe she could be as exciting a discovery as
macy gray. a cross between erika badu and missy elliot, she's
another in the long line of fantastic black us vocalists coming out
right now.
herbert 'the last best' (house mix)
i've always been a fan of herbert and his many guises. this sound
perfectly emcompasses the kind of lo-fi house music with a twist
which connects with other artists like theo parrish and maurice
fulton i play on my show. the twisted dub here is exclusive to this
compilation.
john martyn 'solid air' *
as with the inclusion of 'riverman' on the incredible album, (a
nick drake cover version by andy bay), i have always made the
connection between folk funk and music of black origin. john martyn
shares a space with people like al cooper and shuggy otis, or
rotary connection.
sarah vaughn 'the mystery of man'
this was given to me as a gift from one of my many record collector
friends and has a fascinating story behind it. it was originally on
alpha romeo, taken from a limited edition recording in association
with the vatican where sarah vaughn sings poems written by the
pope. she performed them at a concert at the vatican where she was
joined by the likes of lalo schiffrin and this track is possibly my
favourite song of all time. this is the first time this track will
see the light of day.
ski 'life changes'
i have had a long-term relationship with ski since his band
k-creative were signed to talkin loud and he played live regularly
at that's how it is. this track is taken from a forthcoming ski lp
on sony, and features the kind of hypnotic, modal piano chords and
lopsided vocals i love so much. another classic piece of worldwide
music.
* track appears on the mixed cd-version only, previously released
by sweetbeats
