Like kindred cousins the DFA, Gomma Records make
smart electric music for your ass. The hugely
respected European label is home to Tomboy, Daniele
Baldelli, In Flagranti, WhoMadeWho and Diskokaine;
and theyÆre launching their superb new comp
æGommagang 4Æ (released on 21st May) at Nodisko.
Gomma head honchos the brothers MUNK will be
entertaining us with their anachronistic take on
house, electro, techno and avant dance in a rare
London DJ set, while hotly tipped label
newbiesRODION fly in from Rome for a full live show
û which has already been tearing the roof off of
clubs in their native Italy.
The brilliant Gomma label celebrates 100 releases
and 7 years in the game!
NME û ôGomma is like a German DFA!ö
Munk present Gommagang 4... The two leaders of the
pack, aka (Italian) Mathias Modica and (German)
Jonas Imbery are the founders of the Gomma label
and itÆs main activists. Having launched the label
at the start of the new millennium, the pair have
released two artist albums and created a small
underground empire for themselves. Part of a new
scene of freestyle labels that connect music with
design, alternative art and cutting edge fashion,
Gomma are the German brothers to New YorkÆs DFA and
Whateverwewant, BelgiumÆs Eskimo and FranceÆs Ed
Banger, Tigersushi and Kitsune. A global family,
armed with a naked smile and a flat beat, theyÆre
here for the post-minimal generation...
If by chance you havenÆt checked a Gomma release,
then Gommagang 4 is the perfect place to start. A
label with a distinctive sound but an open musical
boundary, they connect space-electronic and indie
rock, disco and no-wave, weird folk and
techno-funk. Proud of their steady nonconformist
output, theyÆve never followed trends and have now
developed a musical language that has, and still is
influencing many bands and labels alike. True
innovators, they inject originality into the
too-retro rock scene and the ever-so
one-dimensional electronic music world.Having
released 80 x 12ö vinyl singles and 20 x CDs, this
new Gommagang album features tracks from 2006 and
2007. 22 hits and remixes from the last year, itÆs
not so much a DJ mix, but a sonic collage.Heavily
influenced by the famous 70Æs Munich Discorock
spirit and the Italian cosmic vibe , it manages to
cross between numerous styles and genres with a
seamless thread and a unique approach. ItÆs
purposely pitched down and the slow, rough,
theatrical and spaced out sounds makefor one of the
most interesting label compilations of recent
times.
A true representation of their international
roster, GG4 features the exciting solo project of
Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand, Box Codax
(Glasgow), WhoMadeWho (Copenhagen) û who you might
know from their live support for Soulwax last year.
The irresistible Headman (Switzerland) and Stephen
Dewaele from Soulwax (Ghent), Cosmic disco legend
DJ Baldelli (Rimini), Tomboy (Copenhagen) û the guy
who after singles for Get Physical, Kitsune and
TigaÆs Turbo Records released a much appreciated
debut album on Gomma this February. Rodion (Rome),
Drrtyhaze & In Flagranti (New York), Parker Frisby
(Berlin), Transmania (Vienna) and of course Munk
(Munich) who are best known for their indie disco
hit æKick Out The Chairs!Æ which featured James
Murphy and Nancy Wang of LCD Soundsystem.
The British contingent represent on the remix, with
Erol Alkan (aka Mustapha 3000), Playgroup, Naum
Gabo (aka Optimo) and new electronic shooting star
Metronomy all delivering some of their finest work
to date.
Mit der \"GOMMAGANG 4\"-CD ver÷ffentlichen Gomma
ihren 100sten Release und feiern gleichzeitig ihr
7-jΣhriges Bestehen. Das Label hat sich
international einen Namen gemacht mit Musik, die
die Grenzen zwischen Indierock und Electronik,
SpaceDisco und GaragenTechno, Folk und New Wave
immer wieder neu definiert. Mit einem sehr
individuellen Sound, der selten einem bestimmten
Stil zugeordnet werden kann und keiner Mode
hinterherlΣuft. Gomma versuchen sowohl der
Eingleisigkeit, die in der elektronischen Musik
herrscht, als auch dem RetroRock-Revival etwas
Frisches entgegenzusetzen. So wurde auf vielen
Gomma-Platten in den letzten Jahren einiges
vorweggenommen, was jetzt vom Mainstream
aufgegriffen wird und viele Musiker beeinflusst hat
(Neo-Postpunk! SpaceDisco!).
ver÷ffentlicht. Die neue \"GOMMAGANG 4\" CD
beinhaltet 23 Songs und nur auf Vinyl erschienene
Club-Remixe von 2006/2007. Es ist keine normale DJ
Mix-CD, sondern eine Musik-Collage. \"A Superb
Future Disco and Psychosoul Soundtrack\", wie das
Londoner i-D Magazin schrieb.
