   release notes:
The Swedish duo ENDLYSET present their first album in their sixth year of
existence. Almost 36 minutes of Swedish Black Metal somewhere between raw
substance, atmospheric expansion and the cool restraint that so often
characterizes Scandinavian releases of this style. The album Eyes Inside
announces the reflective, introspective descent into the dark zones of
being: misanthropy, death, inner emptiness. Big words, familiar motifs.
The question is not whether darkness is present - but what kind of
   darkness will consume the listener.
The first round begins with anticipation. You retreat, close the door,
leave room for the cold. But what unfolds is less night than twilight. No
fall, no sudden abyss, but a persistent twilight, steady, almost
cautious. The sound is flat, which is not surprising in an underground
context, but the lack of depth is a limitation here. The guitars dominate
the picture, but remain aloof. The drums are clearly drawn, but without
weight - they support, but do not press. Emotional distance sets in.
With "Undergång" the bass takes center stage. Finally a line that the
sound follows. It runs through the song like a dark thread, structuring
it and holding together what would otherwise threaten to dissipate. And
indeed: the bass remains the most striking element throughout the entire
album, the most reliable signal in the semi-darkness. The riffs, on the
other hand, seem interchangeable, the drums functional, the vocals vague
   - more inkling than presence. Not bad. Not inspiring. Here too: twilight.
With "Skuggsjälar" or "Förnimmelser" the atmosphere changes somewhat.
Lead guitars emerge, melodies briefly shimmer like ice under thin snow.
The vocals sometimes leave the familiar barking behind and attempt
solemn, almost imploring passages. But here too, everything remains in
limbo: not intense enough to really captivate, not weird enough to
disturb. The rawness remains restrained, the atmospheric too pale to
really create depth. Towards the end, with "Endlyset" and "I Nattens
Våld", the fusion of atmosphere and rawness is more successful. The long
intros create space, tension, a sense of space and landscape. When the
rawness sets in here, it seems organic, not artificial. For the first
time, atmosphere and heaviness intertwine without neutralizing each other
   - as if the album had to reach this point first.
ENDLYSET have their own sound signature, their own style, their own mood.
The succinct bass remains the central guiding line throughout the entire
album, and the sound develops through its clarity. The drums stand less
for dynamics than for the stability, the structure and support that
provides the songs. The vocals are varied, from grumbling sounds to
individual, solemn passages to snappy barks.
ENDLYSET promise Nordic-cool Black Metal between rawness and atmosphere.
This promise will not be broken, but it will not be kept either. Only
towards the end does the concept come together into something tangible.
What remains is an album with its own signature, individual strong
moments and a lot of unused space. Solid, audible, respectable. Eyes
Inside remains solid, controlled, reserved for long stretches - and that
is exactly where its weakness lies.
