release notes:
Singaporean black metal merchants return with a new album, and the band
deserves credit for putting in the effort to deliver a release that
surpasses their previous work in both songwriting and production quality.
The band also appears to have slightly adjusted their style. While their
2023 album Conquerors ov the Nusantara leaned more towards black-thrash
compared to their straight-up black metal debut Abominable Kingdom ov Sin
from 2021, this new album features even stronger thrash metal elements
than its predecessor.
Despite these changes, the band still manages to retain its signature
Nerraka sound on this album, which connects all of their releases. At the
end of the day, they remain firmly a black metal act. Listening to the
album, it also seems that there is greater input from the other members
of the band, even though Hellthrone continues to serve as the primary
songwriter, unless one recalls that the band's debut was actually a solo
effort by Hellthrone.
On this album, the band does well in delivering riffs that complement the
fast-paced drumming, resulting in an engaging listening experience. Fans
familiar with Nerraka will certainly not be disappointed with this
release. Strong songwriting has always been one of the band's defining
traits, and there is rarely a dull moment in any of their songs. Nerraka
are known for their clever song arrangements while still ensuring that
their music remains rooted in a straightforward old-school metal formula.
As for the production, this album marks another step up from Conquerors
ov the Nusantara, which itself was already an improvement over Abominable
Kingdom ov Sin. This progression clearly shows that the band is serious
about improving in every aspect of their music, and the enhanced
production quality on this release makes the overall listening experience
far more satisfying.
Since it is well known that many bands in Southeast Asia draw heavy
influence from Scandinavian black metal, this album will appeal to those
who appreciate the style of bands such as Marduk and Dark Funeral,
particularly with its strong Middle Eastern thematic elements. The album
carries an intriguing concept, and as with all of their releases, Nerraka
once again stands out as one of the bands helping to define the true
sound of Singaporean black metal.
