Release Notes:
From the not-so-capitol capitol city of sunny Tallahassee, Florida USA comes the
dreamscape alchemy of Look Mexico. The band, now the only members of their
self-proclaimed ôyacht-rockö music revolution, enjoy playing music in shorts and
top-siders. Most people who catch a Look Mexico show want to come back and see
at least one more, and sometimes they might even want to see two or even three
more. In some rare cases these said individuals might even purchase a t-shirt
and perhaps wear it at the next show. This is not looked down on by the band. At
Look Mexico shows it is cool to wear Look Mexico t-shirts. Like we said, Look
Mexico is music revolution.
As fate and good fortune would have it, in the fall of 2004 guitarists and
champion beard-trimmers Matthew Agrella and Dave Bumsted began writing songs
together in dark places. Tired of the clichΘd power-pop and sparkle-core that
was dominating Floridian music at the time, the two began fashioning a sound
completely unfamiliar to Florida, in the vein of such acts as American Football
and Minus the Bear. Eventually recruiting the help of drummer Joshua Mikel and
bassist Tyson Kuhlhoff, their mathy guitar rock riddled with accessible melodies
would soon have show-goers bobbing their heads and shake, shake, shaking their
hips.
In the months that followed, the band began mounting a sizeable home following,
playing their first show with indie legends Karate. In the summer of 2005 they
recorded their debut EP æSo ByzantineÆ. Soon thereafter they booked a few short
tours and a number of weekend dates to support the release of the EP. After a
few months of playing together Look Mexico easily enough found themselves among
the most exciting bands to watch in Florida.
In May of 2006, somewhat dissatisfied with their first release and with much
more anticipation from the Florida music scene, the band headed to the studio to
record æThe CrucialÆ EP. What resulted was an album far superior in construct
and quality to their previous. Guitarist Dave Bumsted parted ways with the band
after the recording to follow out his educational dreams. Before postpartum
could settle in, the band recruited guitarist Ryan Slate and quickly headed out
on the road, this time for a forty day tour, playing a set of sold out shows in
their home state before bringing the rock to those outside their sunny state. As
recent as August 2006, Look Mexico returned from a Mid-West tour with Florida
friends, Band Marino.
With two eps, tour experience, and a solid line-up, Look Mexico continues to
gain steam as they enter the studio in October with long time friend Jared
Wynne. What comes of these recordings will be released on Lujo Records in 2007.
