         █░█    It was a ubiquitous buzzword a decade or so ago,   █░█
         █░█    but one doesn't hear the term electronica very     █░█
         █░█    much these days. As useful a label as it was for   █░█
         █░█    explaining Moby and the Chemical Brothers to the   █░█
         █░█    music-buying masses in the pre-iPod era,           █░█
         █░█    electronica soon proved too all-encompassing to    █░█
         █░█    mean much in a world of seemingly infinite         █░█
         █░█    subgenres. And then garage rawk had its moment,    █░█
         █░█    and everyone forgot why they cared about           █░█
         █░█    beatboxes and samplers in the first place.         █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    So it seems a bit odd for Vancouver's So Called    █░█
         █░█    Recordings to be resuscitating the word in 2007.   █░█
         █░█    Presumably the label's head, Rob Hollingsworth,    █░█
         █░█    chose the word for its all-embracing nature; the   █░█
         █░█    selections on Manoeuvres 1 don't have much in      █░█
         █░█    common beyond the use of programmed beats and      █░█
         █░█    synthesizers. Sinewave's "Wizard of Ahhhs" is a    █░█
         █░█    short but trippy downtempo instrumental, while     █░█
         █░█    Baba Brinkman's "Step Inside" is a rap track,      █░█
         █░█    Tomas Jirku's "Footloose" is a burbling house      █░█
         █░█    cut, and Sonicjoy's "Om Nama Shivaya" is a mantra  █░█
         █░█    set to a slow, looping beat.                       █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    As with any compilation of this kind, Manoeuvres   █░█
         █░█    1 boasts a few winners and a handful of less       █░█
         █░█    successful efforts, but here's to Hollingsworth    █░█
         █░█    for at least attempting to present a               █░█
         █░█    cross-section of what is undoubtedly a small and   █░█
         █░█    fragmented scene. íViva electr╙nica!               █░█
