║ Hikaru Utada was born on january 19th, 1983, in new ║
║ york, ny. she first gained notice as a young singer ║
║ under the name 'cubic u'. she released an all-english ║
║ album title 'precious' which garnered her much praise ║
║ for both her vocal talents as well as her great ability ║
║ as a songwriter. ║
║ In late 1998, hikaru debuted in the japanese market as ║
║ 'utada hikaru'. her first japanese language debut ║
║ single titled 'automatic' was one of the top selling ║
║ singles of 1999. her debut japanese album, 'first love' ║
║ went on to become not only the best selling album of ║
║ 1999, but also the best selling album in japanese ║
║ history. ║
║ Since then, almost all of her japanese language singles ║
║ and albums have gone on to take the top spots on the ║
║ japanese charts. her third album, 'deep river', ║
║ released in june of 2002, sold over 2.3 million copies ║
║ in it's first week, taking over the spot of 'top ║
║ selling album for the first half of 2002' in just it's ║
║ first week of sales. ║
║ In july of 2001, hikaru released a song title 'blow my ║
║ whistle' which was featured on the 'rush hour 2' ║
║ soundtrack. it was her first mainstream english song, ║
║ and it featured foxy brown. the song was a huge hit ║
║ over in japan, and it was played quite frequently at ║
║ clubs and parties. ║
║ In february of 2002, hikaru signed an exclusive ║
║ contract with the island def jam group (a part of the ║
║ universal music group), which would require her to ║
║ produce at least one english language album under the ║
║ name 'hikaru utada'. this contract was an unprecedented ║
║ move in the music industry, and the consequences were ║
║ heard even in the united states, as an article about ║
║ the record deal was written in 'billboard' magazine. ║
║ She has since recorded an english version of her ║
║ popular japanese single 'hikari', which will be ║
║ featured in the ps2 game soundtrack for 'kingdom ║
║ hearts'. she decided that a change in the title was ║
║ necessary, and 'simple and clean' was created. ║
