according to their rather amusing biog, the prophets of sound are
more than just a couple of clowns with a message from the
almighty. circus is a project that has been developed over 2 years
into what can only be described as a truly eclectic long player
that will surprise the listener at every turn.
dylan barnes and jem panufnik have been making music together for
well over a decade, their first band was called president
groovestone which featured simon ratcliffe (later to form top pub
band basement jaxx). tours followed with members of freakpower and
young disciples, but as the lads dug deeper into the night they
saw another avenue for their creativity. so they got studio bound
and in 1995 turned out the first prophets ep my sweet love for
dylan's freshly sprouting sunflower label.
with dylan already working under the earl and mutiny monikers and
jem dressing up as soul of man and looking after his finger lickin
label the boys have been ideally placed to guide the prophets
musical direction.
from the opening percussion fuelled ride of it was a dark and
stormy night... through the off kilter mawesque twilight bump with
it's whistle and whoop drops, the epic dark bass slowbeat of
believe in me to the lovely vocal chords of niara on show u love
and d'empress and mary joy's new dawn it all adds up to one
exciting night out.
and with fans from roger sanchez and sneak to masters at work and
ralph lawson, prophets of sound are close to fulfilling their own
prophecy.
roll up, roll up, the show is about to begin.
