Following the long-overdue re-release of "the Father of hip-hop" Gil-Scott
Heron's landmark Winter In America and The First Note Of A New Day albums,
comes one of his most accomplished political and musical pieces, From South
Africa To South Carolina. Originally released in 1975 on his own Rumal-Gia
Records, this album marks Heron and Jackson at their songwriting peak,
focusing on issues such as apartheid (physical and spiritual) from Africa
to our own shores, freeing the then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela, the threat
of nuclear destruction and Black people's constant struggle for equality.
From South Africa... fuses elements of classical composition with blues,
jazz, soul and sharp political reflections. "Johannesburg," "A Toast To The
People," "Beginnings (The First Minute Of A New Day)," and the bonus track
"Let Me See Your I.D.," from the famed Sun City compilation project are the
absolute gems from this timeless release.
LP originally released 1976, remastered & re-issued 1998
