│
│ Dooley Os Watch My Moves is a 5-track single, the first in a series of previously unreleased hip hop classics now
│ seeing the light of day on 12" vinyl. The series, following on the heels of Stones Throw's 7-inch series, will also
│ see 12-inches from, among others, Homeliss Derilex, and early Connecticut rap classics by Mr. Magic and Pookey Blow.
│
│ While most remember east coast rapper Stezo's mid-school classic Its My Turn, and its revolutionary use of the now
│ infamous Skull Snaps drum break, most don't know that the records roots lie in his cousin, an unknown Connecticut
│ producer/rapper Dooley O. A breakbeat fiend in the late 80s, Dooley (alongside producer counterpart Chris C Lowe) dug
│ up dusty gems and fashioned demos that caught the ear of NYC producers like Paul C. and Large Professor. After a
│ falling out with Stezo, Dooley inked an ill-fated deal with Tav Dash Records (original home of R&B crooner R. Kelly),
│ which lead to an album recorded between 1988 and 1990.
│
│ Though this album never came out, and a frustrated Dooley tossed most of his master tapes in 2001, Stones Throw is
│ proud to present one of hip hop's unknown classic 12"s. A record that, had it come out thirteen years ago, would have
│ served as a benchmark for breakbeat science. A record that impressed the hell out of a young Cut Chemist in the early
│ 90s, when he met Dooley at LA's Good Life Cafe. A record that still sounds funky and relevant today.
│
│
│ *the following is an actual letter from dooley o.
│
│ What's up everybody,
│ I figured I should give you a rundown of what's been happening to me since the Watch My Moves era ('88-'90) so in the
│ immortal words of Slick Rick, here we go...
│ After the album deal with Tavdash Records (which resulted in my shelved 1990 LP) I went out to LA to record and try to
│ get a deal with some of the labels to no success. But I did get to perform at the famous Good Life Cafe I lived around
│ the corner from, and that's where I met (now Jurassic 5's) Cut Chemist. We hit it off talking about vinyl & groups and
│ went beat shopping at the Pasadena flea market and became good friends. But soon Cali started getting a little hectic
│ so...
│ I floated back to CT and started working on beats with the crew KGB (Kids Getting Busy) and pressing records with
│ Grifter Recordings. One record we did was called "Culture Is Talking" by Junior Culture, try finding that one! Other
│ productions included New Haven group DVX (Divine Vocal Xperts) who took it upon themselves to mix a song I produced
│ called "Connecticut What!" without my permission and it came out sounding horrible on the 12-inch.
│ Then in early 1993 I did an access channel show called Graffiti TV where I showed graff (obviously), MC's. DJ's, and I
│ spun/discussed breaks with Chris Lowe on a part of the show we called The Beat Segment. Most of the master videotapes
│ have been tossed in the trash but I do have most of the original Beat Segment's on tape which I will come out soon on
│ DVD. I released 8 volumes of (some call classic) Graffiti TV on VHS and am currently working on Volume 9 so be on the
│ lookout.
│ Anyway, as I got older the graffiti thing got to be a bit of a headache with magazines fronting on ad space and cats
│ just giving me the runaround, so I once again I returned to the beats. Around this time I hooked up with a kid named
│ Egon. I took him under my wing with graff then the beats, gave him a list and he took it off to college, blowing up
│ his radio show in Nashville with the deep-dish funk & breaks, calling weekly to give me the lowdown. Who would of ever
│ known that a few short years later this kid would be one of the biggest diggers in the world?
│ Back to me. One day in 1999 I was cleaning up my basement and found reels of the old KGB album and thought about how
│ wack Hip Hop had become. In a fit of rage and depression I tossed my master reels, 2 albums worth of material, and
│ said it's over. As I trashed the reels I saw 2 DAT's and I said I'll save the DAT's just in case, for my own listening
│ pleasure. Soon after I let my man Quo listen to them, and he just flipped. With his support I thought, maybe this old
│ stuff is still worthwhile after all. So in 2000 I called Egon when he was home from Stones Throw Records in LA and let
│ him listen to the old LP. He was like "Yo, lets put this joint out!" So the student never forgot the teacher (thanks
│ E).
│ I moved out to San Franciso for a year DJing funk & hip hop linking up with some great people like Cool Chris from
│ Groove Merchant. Recently I moved back to Connecticut to try and get some money together. Now I'm working on a new
│ album and making more beats for other MC's who want the real shit. I will be headed back to the West Coast for more
│ music & film adventures so please go cop the LP. Even though its thirteen years old I think it can still burn any
│ underground album out today.
│ Peace & chicken grease,
│ Dooley O
│
│
