after the release of 'let there be funk' where i focused on 70s
funk, i'm now going back to the 'from jazz to soul'n'funk to
blaxploitation' formula.
like my first two brown sugar compilations ('i feel the earth
move' and 'cold sweat'), paint it black is dealing with the
blueprint of today's hiphop grooves. where the headhunters and co.
inspired the rhythm of the music, the street-slick slang of people
like lightin' rod or gil scott-heron echo through history to the
raps of acts like de la soul, beastie boys, the roots and jurassic

in this new selection, the blaxploitation vibe is ruling more than
ever. known as 'blaxploitation' films, back then they satisfied
the demand from inner-city audiences for movies made by and for
blacks. it should be noted that the term 'blaxploitation' refers
to the films' continuation of the trashy 'exploitation' films of
the 1960s rather than the film studios 'using' black actors.
blaxploitation had an enormous musical influence on film and
television. many of the police shows of the 1970s and 1980s in
america and abroad had instantly recognizable funk themes and
incidental music which have survived better than the visuals.
soul-jazz in the early 70s was attuned to the dance rhythms of
more commercial black music, yet still made room for the deep
blues grooves and extended blowing that were hallmarks of the
style in earlier years. on this album artists like rusty bryant,
gene ammons and legends of early jazz-funk (joe thomas; herbie
hancock) are taking the chance to show us some of their best work.
indeed a real manifesto of groove.
