life ran backwards. as heavy industry collapsed, the cyclic,
grinding moans and exaltations of its rusting, now silent
equipment (signs of machine life, doctors called them) became
available for public inspection. as buildings and roads were built
increasingly from sound-absorbent, ecosimulate materials, so
specialist shops emerged, selling echoes of all kinds. the richest
and most nostalgic customers could buy echoes collected from an
inaccessible cavern or perhaps a concert arena that had been
destroyed to make way for the branch headquarters of a home
shopping network. as an isolated phenomenon, music ceased to exist
in any legal form. record companies were a distant memory. ever
since the multimedia industry had outlawed monomedia productions,
underground resistance had flourished. the most heretical members
of the organisation created sonic fakes, wicked satires of the
ridiculously tacky products finally extruded out of the virtual
reality industry. fabulously detailed, saturated with passion and
delirious organic rhythms, the electronic simulacra were so
sophisticated that they gave a listener the total sensory fix,
mood colouration and enviromental evocation of vr, without the
corporate ideology, animate perma-logos, shopping breaks and
anti-tamper warnings. finding and buying sound art was difficult,
dangerous but possible. the desire had to be strong.
