"Hard to know if the title here is in reference to Richard
D James' anthem, some sort of darkside variation perhaps,
but beyond the first couple of seconds into the title
track (and the glitch convulsions that set the scene for
what's to follow) - it becomes clear that Aphex Twin, this
ain't. "Window Smasher" has more in common with Jungle
than any other genre that comes to mind : a slowed down
Amen break lays foundation for all manner of rave stabs,
wobblin basslines and detuned synths, hoover noises and
mentasm variations to arrange themselves over - nice
darkside business that fits this label's manifesto
perfectly. "Pistols At Dawn" on the flipside keeps the
breaks in a junglist mode, the one-note bassline tweaked
into that almost distorted low-end zone we like so much.
"Stand Alone" ends the set with a fitting end-of-night
vibe, an almost half-step template fitting into neon blue
synths and a more chilled out head - though, as you might
expect, "Chill Out" is a relative term, especially when
used to discuss the work of this uncompromising producer.
