Expansive pop tunes that could burst the clouds and break your heart. Rebel
Yellow is a band from Minneapolis with a deep and developed sound. At its heart
are Brad Weller and Tracy T. Weller, two expats lured to the city by punk rock;
he, from northern Pennsylvania, and she, from the outskirts of Duluth. Brad
played in Brown Star and later formed Hickey Party. Tracy joined Hickey Party
and the two became inseparable. After Hickey Party, Tracy played and sang in the
Psychedelicates, while Brad wrote songs and played guitar in the basement, among
other diversions. The Psychedelicates were a electro pop quintet that appeared
on Radio KÆs Stuck on AM compilation, Chilly Northern Women/Spinout Records, and
were guests on many local radio and tv stations. They disbanded when their bass
player moved to NYC. Rebel Yellow formed in 2003 and BradÆs smart strighforward
songs are out for everyone to hear. The thrill is the same as uncovering your
soon-to-be-favorite new local band in the 45-bin during a rainy Saturday
afternoon spent among the racks at the late, great Northern Lights on the corner
of 7th and Hennepin Avenue, a spot where Brad once schlepped records. Rebel
Yellow just completed their EP The Sun Defeats the Snow and are already working
on their full-lenth record. The songs on the EP were recorded at various studios
around Minneapolis; Ed AckersonÆs Flowers Studio, Sean HoffmanÆs Studio in N.E.,
on their 8-Track recorder in their basement studio and at Squirrels on the Moon.
They brought all of the recorded tracks to their friends at Squirrels on the
Moon where the producers Chris and Jeff created the bed of beats for all tracks
except Chance with You. Squirrels on the Moon produced the record with Rebel
Yellow and will be producing their full-length record this summer as well.
