Release Notes:
Psychedelic is a term that receives a mixed response
from music fans. For some it describes pop at its
most creative. Bands pushing the boundaries of rock
ænÆ roll to their very limits in their pursuit of
innovation. Albums like Sgt PepperÆs Lonely Hearts
Club Band, Forever Changes, Pet Sounds and the Soft
Bulletin; records of undeniable brilliance that have
stretched the concept of the pop long player to
breaking point. For others, psychedelic is little
more than a phrase used to describe bands with their
heads firmly inserted up their own backsides and
under the influence of far too many drugs; musicians
that explore their own sense of self importance for
no-oneÆs benefit or entertainment but their own.
Luckily æBe He MeÆ, the debut LP from Annuals,
appears to fall into the former category. Despite
none of their six members being older than 22, it is
a staggeringly mature first release. Drawing on
influences as diverse as Hank Williams, Bjork, Paul
Simon and Radiohead, Annuals make the kind of
cracked psychedelia that oozed out of California in
the late nineteen sixties. Sounding more like the
product of Haight-Ashbury circa 1968 than the bandÆs
North Carolina home, æBe He MeÆ is a glorious slice
of experimental pop shot right through with a big
hit of sunshine acid. Warped lysergic visions wind
their way round beautiful pop hooks and walls of
noise for what ought to become the soundtrack to
everyoneÆs summer.
