Together with their musical guests, the WDR Big Band Cologne has developed a
pioneering project for the integration of the cultures. The production "Jazz
al'Arab" combines Arabian or Maghrebian music with jazz in a special way making
full use of what both music directions have in common: rhythmical basic
patterns, the reference to archaic form, but also the freedom for improvisation
and for individual interpretation. With convincing naturalness, the guests Karim
Ziad, Aziz Sahmaoui, Mehdi Askeur and Rhani Krija as well as the WDR Big Band
demonstrate to the audience, how close this music culture is, although they are
associated with distance. At the latest when the RAI piece Meli Ana is to be
heard, all the listeners will understand music can cross borders and be
universal. Michael Gibbs is one of the leading arrangers. He has not only
written for the jazz greats, but also for well-known names in pop music, such as
Elton John. Thanks to his interest in the music of other cultures, he was simply
predestined for this project - as the arranger and leader of the WDR Big Band.
