people say that the intro line to a band's bio must ooze with wit
and charm, but what you need to know about this group requires no
cliches. the new deal is a toronto trio bringing the vibe and flow
of spinning records back to live instruments. the music is
instrumental, organic and improvised, the band is real.
the new deal was formed in late '98 by three leaders of the toronto
electronic/jazz scene. keyboardist/moogist jamie shields (one step
beyond/íque vida!), drummer/beatboxer darren shearer (gypsy sol)
and bassist dan kurtz (íque vida!) had all felt an urgency to push
their music further into the electronic realm, but to maintain an
organic, natural feel for both live and recorded performance. their
mandate: to create their own brand of improvised organic-electronic
music without samplers or sequencers.
the new deal's music is 95% improvised, blending the band's
interplay with melodic tags that recur in each performance. these
concerts resulted in their first recording "this is live",
available now in canada (mo'funk/outside), united states
(mo'funk/city hall) and the uk (mo'funk/timewarp).
the new deal is a leading part of a growing musical community based
around sound & light records, an in-house record
label/studio/musical and creative collective founded by the new
deal's three members. established in toronto, sound & light strives
to create and sustain a body of music and musicians that perform,
record, produce and distribute a continually evolving source of
musical works from jazz to hip-hop, latin to pop, ambient dub to
funk and beyond. utilizing its strong support base of canadian
musicians, sound & light is spearheading numerous projects
including remixes for montreal's interchill records and upcoming
releases from íque vida! and the sound & light source, a jazz/funk
collective of principal s&l players.
