keeping his distance from the ranks of glitchy laptop uber-geeks,
paul wirkus set himself a task; to produce and record his music in
a totally live environment, no overdubs just straight to dat. itÆs
a gallant statement, and using minidisk recorders, samplers and
effects pedals heÆs just about succeeded in making something which
bashes heads with the laptop scene while knowingly taking a
different route. thereÆs something about the sound of live
manipulation that always seems to draw me in, maybe itÆs the hiss
or the strange saturation but it gets me salivating quicker than
the clean sound of a laptop ever did. it bears some relation to
philip jeck in the way he produces, looping and effecting vinyl
records to create soundscapes from the strangest of sources. here
we see samples distorted and bent into something else altogether
and at times the process can seem to overturn the music itself,
but wirkus tames his impulses and never lets the glitch get the
better of him. a surprisingly rich release full of harmonic
ambience and glacial drones, this is an experimental album itÆs
okay to embrace. recommended.
