A richly metaphoric expression of worries about climate change and
marine devastation, blending hydrophonic acoustic and electronic
sources to spell out a sonorous, subaquatic narrative FFO Mark Jenkin
film scores, Thomas Koner, AFX's SAW II... Like its predecessors,
2023's organ-led 'All Hands Bury the Cliffs at Sea' and 2022's brass
study 'Black Clouds Above the Bows', Wanderwelle's latest nautical
almanac focuses on a single core element to cement its theme. This
time, they cleverly pare things down, using cymbals in "various stages
of corrosion" to center their disquieting soundscapes. The instruments
were submerged in seawater first to imprint the character of the ocean
on metal, so when they bowed the rusted, resonant discs, the expected
sound was rougher and more unpredictable, heightened by unusual
pitches and overtones. These warbling, scraping tones are bolstered by
deep, echoing thuds and rattling chains on opener 'At Cape Lonesome'
and Wanderwelle, fixing an Arctic-cum-Gothic mood that wouldn't be out
of place accompanying the titles of that genius first season of AMC's
'The Terror'. And with track titles like 'Men Dragging Carcasses' and
'Dissolving Souls', you can bet the material doesn't get any lighter.
The collective work with very little to provide ample doom, scraping
metal and coaxing out eerie rumbles that immediately shuttle the mind
to a vast, rusted boat taking on water. Even their reverberations
sound as if they're rocking gently back and forth as a ship's expired
crew decay in the salty atmosphere. On 'The Sea Bishop's Sermon', the
cymbals are tapped and rolled, offering a disconcerting textural shift
for a moment and 'A Spectral Albatross' takes us above deck for a
moment, as birds circle the ghastly remains of what once was. It's
grim stuff, we won't deny that, but produced with no small amount of
finesse. more
