    │release notes.

Ultramarine, London-based duo Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond, began
life in 1989 initially inspired by early UK house music and
long-standing schoolboy crushes on the white funk of A Certain
Ratio, 23 Skidoo and Cabaret Voltaire. Simon Reynolds described
their sound on their classic first lp "Perhaps the first and best
stab at that seeming contradiction-in-terms, pastoral techno... all
sun-ripened, meandering lassitude and undulant dub-sway tempos...
like acid-house suffused with the folky-jazzy ambience of the
     Canterbury scene."

On their underrated 2nd lp they go even deeper into the countryside
and recruit fellow traveler and Canterbury original Robert Wyatt to
provide songwriting, recording and distinctive vocal support.

"United Kingdoms is a densely textured experience that stands up to
repeated listens and remains Ultramarine's most ambitious, most
conceptually rewarding album. Less dependent on recognizable
samples than its predecessor, the album employs live instruments
(accordion, harmonica, violin and woodwinds) for a chamber-techno
effect...in execution, the songs are percolating pop masterpieces,
encapsulating the band's fascination with technology, socialism and
     heritage." Trouser Press
