The galaxy of electronic music has always been littered with
objects of varying interest, from retro compilations to
unlikely syntheses that are either over-commercialised or
over-specialised. But this is no real surprise for a world
whose essential dimensions have always been based on a theory
of recover and repeat (yes, good old sample and loop).

And to these congested skies, Tripsichord distribution adds two
rather intriguing UFOs at almost exactly the same time. The
first is a Quatermass offering, an original Belgian label
willing to rummage for its findings, and which sets itself
apart once again through its interest in the very beginnings of
the Paris electro scene with a compilation claiming to be
"pre-French touch" and which cocks a cheeky snook with its
title "Rocker's Delight: The Rock Sound Of Darkest Paris".

The second UFO is much smoother, almost shiny, entitled
"Digital Disco" and edited by Force Inc. It runs over the best
moments of house crossed with pop. But do these two projects
have enough oomph to make their mark amongst the myriad of
flying objects shot into a far-off orbit and long-since
forgotten?

At first sight, "Rocker's Delight" looks to be fighting a
losing battle; the timing just seems wrong for digging up the
roots of the French touch when no-one today even appears to
know the meaning of that concept. The French scene is scattered
between label-shy groups such as Telepopmusik and Rin⌠cer⌠se,
and Gooom school electronica styles such as Gel, Mils, M83,
etc. And now that the ground has been cleared by German and
British sound engineers, we could fear that this compilation,
whose oldest track dates from 1990, will seem positively
ancient.

On board the much more contemporary Digital Disco we are
welcomed by sequin-suited pilots from all four corners of the
dance floor: Metro Area from New York, Swayzak from the UK,
Mathias SchaffhΣuser from Germany and more. But even with this
initial boost, this compilation finds it difficult to get off
the ground. Waiting patiently for the melody, the structure,
the rebellious feel, the pop pearl to take us to the top, we
realise there's nothing coming. Amongst this medley of
vocoderized tones and repetitive beats, in this
over-enthusiastic and even sometimes we feel 'put-on'
production, the evident and unstoppable solemnity of Metro
Area, the quirky effects of Data 80, the eighties flashbacks of
Astrobal, the sombre minimalism of Swayzak and the catchy and
intelligent designs of Care manage to keep their heads above
water, but remain a bit of a damp squid. This virtually
straight path is an easy one to walk down, but doesn't require
much determination.

On the contrary, the "Rocker's Delight" vessel forces us to
prick up our ears after only a few tracks along its improbable
flight path. It zigzags so far from our formatted asteroids
with utter disregard for any collisions it might take with it
in its wake. No future, dadaist punk Costes seems to be
shouting in a disturbing yet staggering track "Trop tard". Sex
and no future correct the compΦres Mirwais, Christophe Monier
(Nature) and Patrick Vidal (Sutra) in "Victime" - and I quote
"Baise-moi car je devrais Ωtre dΘjα mort" -and in the
well-named Discotique techno rock fireship "Sexe dur". This
formation, born from the equation of Vidal + Monier imbues
avant-garde minimalism with an original big beat sound ("Amour,
amor, love", you'd never think was written in 1991). Vidal
plucks an unexpected dub string ("Salinas") and Arielle slowly
winds down the trip introducing troubling tension ("Tombes").
And this entire, innovative and daring, extraordinarily varied
musical universe free of all taboos, concentrates from start to
finish on a few years and just one place: Paris.

In brief, the 130 BPM world tour offered by Digital Disco is
relaxing, but you'd be better to opt for a visit to the
tortuous catacombs of Paris where you'll find a truly black
hole, Rocker's Delight, that will swallow you whole.

Do you really think there was nothing before the "French
touch"?
France has always been packed with musicians who opened up new
ways. Some bands have actually developed a cult following,
whether it is Marie et les garτons for whom Patrick Vidal was
| playing, or Taxi Girl composed of Mirwais Ahmadza∩ | both Afrika Bambaataa and Speedy J. With singles "Baby Wants To |
Rock", "The Jag", powerful remixes (OMD, Underworld, The
Chemical Brothers), and the album "Bleep To Bleep", The
Micronauts stands out by playing a beefed-up electro-'pop'.

- MATTHIEU BALLET ex-Ach So, Oui Oui (at the time of their 2nd
album "Formidable"), M. Chance, Mukta, now a renowned producer
especially for his work with Arielle (on albums: "Toute une vie
α une" and "Mortelle"), Thomas Fersen (latest album "Quatre")
and Miossec (latest album "Br√le").

- TOM BOUTHIER, along with his brother, has extensively toured
as a DJ throughout England under the name Tom & Jerry Bouthier;
they both formed Riviera Splash (on Stress) and The Eurostars

provided with a master's hand by DAFT PUNK.

"Rocker's Delight - The Rock Sound Of Darkest Paris" is the
result of a crossing of the swords between electronica and
rock, funk, old school hip hop, house, etc. Far from being a
patchwork of dissonant tunes, this album gives a glimpse of a
more sombre Paris, more decadent, and in an unconventional need
for grooves.

Rocker's Delight is a reference to the Sugarhill Gang and their
hit "Rapper's Delight", the first rap music hit.

The Rock Sound Of Darkest Paris is a reference to Joey Negro's
compilation on Republic, tracing back the history of garage
(The Garage Sound Of Deepest New York).
