Time for another round-up of where Paper Recordings are at, as they
embed their second Splinter compilation in the collective consciousness.
The Splinters are generally a collection of recent 12"'s, with a few
older tracks thrown in for good measure, introducing the increasingly
impressive length and breadth of the Paper back catalogue - they also
just happen to indicate how the Manchester-based label keeps getting better
and better. How do they do it? Well, by casting its net wider and wider to
find the cream of the crop in house music, keeping their ears open for
talent in the form of Problem Kids, Kenny Hawkes, Crazy Penis, Those
Norwegians, Shaboom, Essa, Solaris Heights, Dirty Jesus and Paper Issue 2,
all of which feature here. Standout performances here must include the sharp
drum sound of Crazy Penis and their now, er, seminal "Baby We For Real" -
a real killer track to start off with, grooves so smooth they sound designed
by Newson or Starck; Paper Issue 2's crafty dub-meets-house; Dirty Jesus'
"Don't Fuck With My Shit (Salt City Edit)" - 'the last days of disco' never
seemed such a bizarre concept; the lush immersion of Solaris Heights'
"Fusique"; Problem Kids' "Miles Away (2 Bit Whore Mix), which features a
bassline so good that Bernard Edwards must be looking down with approval;
and perhaps best of all, Those Norwegians' classic "Da Kingue Da Mazda" -
a seriously warped groove, centred around a reversed guitar/drum sample
which is so smartly crafted and unusual, yet so effortlessly funky, it
leaves most self-proclaimed "intelligent dance music" floundering in its
wake. As ever, top packaging and design imbue the whole project with a
belief and commitment that dance music of this quality deserves.
