This, the first compilation from the Manchester-based label Paper
Recordings, is a timely reminder of the strength and variety in
house music. Paper is amongst the best-respected independent dance
labels, thriving on the astute leadership of Pete Jenkinson and
Andy Gough, who almost keep tabs on a disparate bunch of reprobates
in Elliot Eastwick, Miles Hollway, Ben Davis, Jason Boardman (and
others). This lot, and their stablemates, just happen to be among
the finest progressive dance music DJs and musicmakers. That 'P'
word (progressive, not Paper) is (again) used by motion in a
positive sense. With Paper, what we get is a sense of always
blurring the edges of house music, without losing that essential
vision of, well, community. So we have the warped funk of Those
Norwegians, the almost-Madchester sound of Cine City (an early
outing for rising star Wai Wan), near-techno house with Wastepaper,
jazz funk courtesy of Crazy Penis, Derrick Carter dropping some
vocals for Salt City Orchestra, and SCO's now-legendary "The Book".
Summat for all for the family. Perhaps Paper's success can be
attributed to a refreshing mix of deeply caring about their music,
whilst deflecting pretension with an earthy sense of humour and
avoiding parochialism via their increasingly international roster.
