Release Notes:

Frank Black found fame as the singer in The Pixies,
one of the most influential bands of recent decades.
Following the acrimonious split he went on to
release countless albums full of the fantastic song
writing skills he displayed previously.

'93-03' brings together some of his best work from
the last 10 years, including his work with The
Catholics as well as his early albums such as 'Cult
Of Ray' and 'Teenager Of The Year'.

I imagine that the tracklisting for this album has
caused intense speculation and arguement amongst his
legion of fans, as to cut 100's of songs down to
just 23 seems an almost impossible task. The
selection on offer here does however give a good
insight to the progression and growth of the artist.
There is a discernable mellowing from the terse
energy of 'Ten Percenter' and 'Czar' from the
self-titled album through to 'Massif Centrale' and
'Manitoba' from 2003's 'Show me your tears'.

Perhaps the most exciting song from this release is
the new Black Francis track 'Threshold Apprehension'
which appears as a secret track. For the uninitiated
"Black Francis" was his on stage moniker through his
time in the Pixies, and it is under this guise that
he returns with a more forceful and agitated sound
reminiscent of some of his previous bands best work.

Ultimately this release provides a fantastic
starting block for anyone interested in
investigating Frank Black. The true joy however of
this artist is in listening through all of his
albums and finding the stories and song structures
that are hidden deep within his back catalogue.
