Release Notes:
The second album of Editors from Birmingham will be
out soon. Editors had quite some succes two years
ago with the great debut album The Back Room, so
the expectations were of course quite high for this
always difficult second album. The fans of the
melancholic indierock of Editors can be delighted.
An End Has A Start is at least as good, perhaps
even better. On An End Has A Start Editors go a few
steps further than on the debut and nowhere the
symptoms of a so called second album syndrome can
be traced. This time Editors does not only play
infectious catchy songs such as æBonesÆ, which very
much resembles æMunichÆ or the danceable æThe
Racing RatsÆ, but goes more into depth as well with
slightly bombastic tunes such as æThe Weight of the
WorldÆ, the very beautiful æEscape the NestÆ or the
daring æWhen Anger ShowsÆ. Here comparisons with
Echo & the Bunnymen are somewhat in place, but
Editors reflects a different sound above all.
Further highlights on this new album are without
doubt the great song æSmokers Outside The Hospital
DoorsÆ with a choir in the end of the song and the
titletrack æAn End Has A StartÆ. In æPush Your Head
Towards The AirÆ you will hear emotion and pathos
in the direction of Coldplay and with that Editors
goes a step too far in trying to create a big
sound. Not exactly my favorite on this album. The
end of the album unfortunately is less strong with
somewhat boring and quiet songs like als æSpidersÆ
and æWell Worn HandÆ. The rest of the An End Has A
Start album however has a beautiful balance between
the slightly on bands such as Joy Division and The
Chameleons based sound such as we know from The
Back Room and a more varied and especially more
bombastic sound towards Snow patrol and Coldplay.
Editors completely meet up the expectations on this
second album that were created with their debut
album.
