That Pull Tiger Tail can create music as expansive and
triumphal as The Twang but with fewer members is a real
feather in their caps. So too is the fact that
'Hurricanes' is such a perfectly arranged and clinically
dispatched slice of indie pop splendour.
Guitars spray, drums surge and vocals soar while the bass
keeps the whole thing on course, heading ever skyward. At
times it sounds like a controlled but cacophonous war,
with each element battling the others to gain overall
control of the volume knob; guitar and vocal involving
themselves in a separate scuffle to reach the highest
note.
The track begins calmly enough - a clipped two-chord riff
and an assertive but restrained rhythm section guiding the
verse. By the time the second chorus kicks in though,
there's no stopping the musical hurricane as it sets about
destroying all in its path, guitars spiralling higher and
higher. Then, the storm has passed, and it's time to relax
and get your breath back. Exhausting and exhilarating in
equal measure.
