this one contained a two cd pack (14 tracks by ryo co. and a
cd-rom with 12 different flash videos) i decided to rip the audio
album only...
i suppose you might say ryo co combines a plethora of styles from
simple but effective funky jazz tunes with great coagulated clots
of electronica, through complex aggitated little rhythms owing
much to drum 'n bass to straight-from-the-street rap. although
initially a little self-indulgent, their forays into the
massed-entangled forests of raw electronic noise become addictive,
moving from an experimental avant garde electro-dabbling to rap to
drum 'n bass
when not overtly self-indulgent, this album can offer much to the
listener, combining simple rhythmic structures over whose skeletal
frames are hung some intriguing sonic draperies. sounds project
from the speakers like a kind of projected holophonics. the music
bunches together broken electronics, stacatto-machine-gun drums
and treated voices, turning what might have been aggressive drum
'n bass into a jap noise audio assault which owes at least a
graceful nod towards the residents.
subtle it isn't, but effective it certainly can be. on occasion
the miasma of gutted computer voices is mixed back to allow a busy
and distinctive sound liberty.
it could be a mutant variation of such people as hat, with their
ability to combine rigid construction with seemingly raw and ruddy
electronics sounding more like accidently evolved creations from
gutted hi fi's and washing machines trying to find their own voice
and thus establish themselves as existant beings. it also reminds
me of the at-the-edge dabblings of six and more, where anything
can and will happen.
not always an easy album to listen to, and a devil to review, this
is nevertheless an ever-intriguing journey through automata and
modern culture, through a sub- "blade runner" assimilation of
multi-cultural ideas and electro-evolutionary junk.
