An apt title indeed. Unlike other compilations from
the Rough Guide series that focus on a specific
country or genre, this indispensable anthology for
lovers of vintage dance music incorporates
treasures from a variety of styles. The unifying
element here is the time frame--the fertile decades
between the late '50s and the early '80s--when West
African pop came of age by creating a mesmerizing
stew of spiraling electric guitars, echoes of
Afro-Cuban big band and lyrics brimming with
nationalistic pride (the dark era of European
colonialism was finally over.) Much of the material
here can be classified under the honeyed styled
known as highlife, including a stunning opening
track with a rich calypso flavor by Ghana's
venerable E.T. Mensah. There's also the James
Brown-like funk of Sierra Leone's Geraldo Pino and
the Heartbeats, as well as lengthy workouts by two
of Africa's most celebrated orchestras--Senegal's
Orchestra Baobab and Guinea's Bembeya Jazz. Popular
music doesn't get any more soulful than this.

Product Description
The Rough Guide To West African Gold features music
produced in sub-Saharan West Africa from the late
1950s up to the early 1980s - a golden era in
African music. Highlife guitars and horns from
Ghana and Nigeria, Guinean big band music from the
state run Syliphone label, early Senegalese mbalax
with its tasty Latin influences and the funky
Afrobeat sound that shakes the hippest dancefloors
across the globe, this is the big beat of West
Africa!
