::::
:::: "Black Fire" needs no introduction. As Andrew Hill's virtual
:::: induction into the Blue Note pantheon of luminaries, it remains
:::: as thrilling now as any jazz recording of the 1960's. It is a
:::: taut, vigorous affair, characterized by the pianist's
:::: intelligent compositions and an air of fierce, inexorable
:::: creativity. Hill, who always sounded like some maniacal,
:::: acid-induced crossbreeding of Thelonious Monk and Erik Satie,
:::: sounds as urgent and forceful as on any of subsequent albums,
:::: his writing idiosyncratic and assured.
::::
:::: The makeshift studio band does wonderful work here; Henderson's
:::: blustery attack is the perfect foil for the leader's swooning,
:::: luscious lines, and Davis and Haynes hold down the bottom end
:::: with remarkable poise. With Van Gelder's remastering, Haynes in
:::: particular sounds like a whirlwind of rhythmic force, smothering
:::: the empty spaces with his staggered, polyrhythmic attack,
:::: hammering out the bottom end like a WWII-era carpet bombing.
::::
:::: The band shows ample confidence in executing Hill's often
:::: complicated arrangements, maintaining a series of concentric
:::: dialogues that are as jarring as they are telepathic. Hill has a
:::: knack for blurring the lines of convention, taking traditional
:::: forms and phrases and making them sound startlingly new.
::::
:::: The title track, for example, is a full-bodied composition that
:::: turns the delicate monotony of swinging waltz-time bop into a
:::: surging, frenzied tour-de-force. It is indicative of this album
:::: as a whole, a legendary session as extraordinary and involving
:::: as anything that's ever come down the grapevine.
::::
:::: Alfred Lion called Andrew Hill his last great discovery and
:::: "Black Fire" was the pianist's brilliant Blue Note debut.
:::: Despite the originality and complexity of Hill's compositions,
:::: Joe Henderson, Richard Davis and Roy Haynes sound like they've
:::: been playing them for years. Added to the original LP are two
:::: alternate takes.
::::
:::: R.I.P. Andrew Hill: June 30, 1931 - April 20, 2007.
