Releasenotes:
Recovered Frequencies returns for its second volume, once again
digging into the lesser-known corners of Oliver Lieb's extensive
catalogue. Three of the four tracks have never been released before,
while all four come from a period when Lieb was working across a wide
range of aliases and identities -- Azid Force, Paragliders, Spicelab
and under his own name. Following Volume 1's journey through L.S.G.
and The Ambush, Volume 2 opens up another side of Lieb's work,
bringing together four tracks that have largely remained outside the
spotlight.
Untold History comes from Azid Force, the project Lieb built with
Pascal F.E.O.S. in the early nineties. Their first records went out
through Superstition, back when acid, techno and trance were still one
blurry thing. Azid Force always carried the tougher, more psychedelic
edge of that sound. The title fits. Another piece surfacing from a
catalogue that has been slowly finding its way back. Paragliders'
Cosmic Chrome moves into different territory. Softer, more spacious,
one of Lieb's more hypnotic aliases. Paragliders always belonged to
the melodic side of the Superstition sound, and Cosmic Chrome sits
right in that world: long-form sequencing, suspended harmonies,
movement that takes its time.
Then ID, released under Lieb's own name, originally tucked away on the
1994 compilation Universe, The Tribal Gathering '94. It has been
missing from the usual overview of his work, exactly the kind of
compilation-only track Recovered Frequencies exists to dig back out.
The collection closes with Spicelab's Distorted Planets. Spicelab was
one of Lieb's key projects during the Harthouse years, the place where
techno got stranger, more physical, more abstract, without ever losing
its structure. Distorted Planets reconnects with that part of his
output and closes out a volume that shows just how many directions
Lieb was working in parallel at the time.
None of this is about treating old tracks as lost classics that need
fixing. Recovered Frequencies, Vol. 2 just puts them back where they
belong, next to the better-known records from the same period, back in
the wider picture. Four tracks, three of them unreleased until now,
from four different corners of Oliver Lieb's catalogue. Pulled from
the margins. Back in circulation.
