Michael Heilrath is one of the key players in the notorious Weilheim scene that gave birth to such bands as
Notwist, Lali Puna, Tied & Tickled Trio and Console.
Heilrath is the musical engine room in Morr Music post-rockers Couch, alongside Ms John SodaÆs Stefanie
Bohm, and for this soundtrack project, he takes his cues directly from the sort of
electronically-embellished, instrumental pop heÆs renowned for, meaning that as soundtracks go, this is a
comparatively un-cinematic affair.
The film in question, Shoppen, sounds conspicuously like some sort of Bavarian rom-com, so the very fact
that HeilrathÆs music here sounds so refreshingly unsentimental and consistently sonically unconventional
is a triumph in itself. Most of the tracks here are held together by expertly assembled electronic rhythms
with sweetly harmonious guitar and keyboard passages preserving a keen sense of melody throughout.
That said, thereÆs quite some range to HeilrathÆs work here, taking in classic Morr-style poptronics,
squished acidic techno, and low-key, lulling post-rock.
