Everybody knows the famous phrase - Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, itÆs
Superman! But in this case weÆll say: Is it a singer? Is it an actress? Is it a
tv-personality? Yes, itÆs a superwoman named Birgit!
Birgit played the female leading role of a Chinese acrobat in the remake of a
Dutch classic knights tale called ôFloris - the movieö, a priority release in
the Holiday season of 2004. And yeah, she co-hosted the weekly ôCountdownö chart
show on commercial TV outlet Veronica. She lends her voice to numerous major
cartoon-series: ôSponge Bob The Movie,ö ôMy Dad is a Rockstarö, ôIce Ageö and so
on. She starred in a popular Dutch television series about sex and
relationships. On stage she played a tough girl in a Dutch box office hit
musical.
As if that isnÆt enough she also starred in David MametÆs stageplay ôSexual
Perversityö. Okay, weÆve proved our point that Birgit is a most versatile
artistà but weÆre just warming up!
BirgitÆs exciting new music album is what we want to talk about here:
True Stories I Made Up, a BirgitMusic production, licensed by Zip Records, is
quite different from her previous album (released in the Netherlands). Pop songs
with a clear verse-chorus-verse structure, like her hit singles from the past
(ôA Little Famousö, ôI Knowö and ôFew Like Youö) have remained. But thatÆs about
the sole similarity between this album and her successful debut album, ôFew Like
Meö (Virgin Records, 2001).
On True Stories I Made Up Birgit is confidently steering into another direction,
without loosing hit potential. Tough, self-confident songs go hand in hand with
BirgitÆs more personal, intimate style. Her new sound? A mixture of Gwen
Stefani, Blondie, Kate Bush and Dido. Listen to the irresistible track Not Just
Anyone and first single Guniang, and youÆll surely catch our drift.
This album, her USA debut, more or less documents BirgitÆs personal history of
the last two years. She likes to describe her new album as a tasty little bag
full of candy in different flavours. Some sweet, some sour, some bitter and
definitely some spicy and salty ones. True Stories I Made Up sounds like Birgit
growing up in public. The girl and her music have both matured considerably. She
gives us something to dance and shake our heads to but weÆre also given some
slow, soulful songs such as Sleeping Pill and her painfully beautiful cover of
Wuthering Heights . Those who care to listen to the lyrics in between all the
dancing will appreciate the feelings.
The songs on True Stories I Made Up will stick with you for a long time. And so
will Birgit.
