JUNGLE GYM RECORDS presents ôOddities & Raritiesö, the long-awaited return
of Los Angeles (via Delaware) legends SPINDRIFT! On the lam since 2019Æs
ôClassic Soundtracks Vol. 3ö (Alternative Tentacles Records), SPINDRIFT
rides back into town with an absolutely essential collection of their
earliest recordings, written and recorded in Newark, DE from 1991-1998.
If youÆve been paying attention to psychedelic music in the United States
at any time since the early 90s, SPINDRIFT needs no introduction. A true
pioneer of spaghetti western surf-gaze, leading man Kirpatrick Thomas (with
his rotating band of merry men and women) toured extensively through the
90s and 2000s with the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dead Meadow,
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Mountain, Kurt Vile and Black Angels,
self-booking DIY tours and shows anywhere and everywhere the world over
(including a literal ghost town tour that was documented via 2014Æs
ôSpindrift: Ghost Of The Westö).
In the early 2000Æs, Thomas and the band relocated to Los Angeles to pursue
opportunities in film and were featured in the first two seasons of HBOÆs
Eastbound & Down, 2008 biker-exploitation flick ôHell Rideö (produced by
Quentin Tarantino), the VICE documentary series ôCoffin Joe,ö 2005
independent film ôThe Legend of GodÆs Gunö (which is soundtracked entirely
by SPINDRIFT and was co-produced by Thomas himself) and more. Concurrently,
the bandÆs sound continued to evolve over the course of 10+ full-length
vinyl editions via Tee Pee Records, Xemu Records, Little Cloud and the
aforementioned Alternative Tentacles Records, run by Dead Kennedys vocalist
Jello Biafra (who co-produced Classic Soundtracks Vol. 3 and has a
longstanding collaborative relationship with the band).
At the height of their powers, everything came to a grinding halt in 2020
when the pandemic forced our eternally road-bound act to a standstill.
Holed up in his Echo Park bungalow, Thomas re-discovered 12 volumes of 2-
and 4-track cassette recordings from the projectÆs earliest days; alternate
takes, forgotten gems, acoustic instrumentals, analog electronics jams,
cheap drum machine industrial, spoken word poetry, experimental tape-splice
collages, frequency generator drones, FX unit trickery, karaoke machine
field recordings, celestial ambient synth odysseys and more!! Thomas and
friend / engineer Jason Simon (Dead Meadow, Spectral Fields) immediately
set about the painstaking process of digitizing and mixing the entire
collection - ôOddities & Raritiesö is the initial offering from this
incredible body of work, an instant cult classic only further canonizing
Thomas / SPINDRIFTÆs place as true heroes of the American Underground.
