Formed in 2021, Selenoplexia has developed a sound
grounded in death and black metal while reaching into
doom, sludge, post-rock, and progressive music.
Guitarist Daniel, drummer Jonathan, bassist Sawyer, and
vocalist Courtney move between dissonant atmosphere and
sheer aggression, with songs built around shifting
structures, stark contrasts, and a strong sense of
narrative.
The band released its debut EP in 2022, followed by its
first full-length, Exalt and Despair, on October 13,
2023. The album received favorable attention from
outlets including the Chicago Reader and Denmark's
Metalized. Selenoplexia has since played extensively
throughout Chicago and the Midwest, sharing bills with
Goatwhore, Maul, Morta Skuld, Deterioration, Escuela
Grind, and others.
On October 9, 2026, Selenoplexia returns with its second
full-length, Beneath the Lunar Tyrant. Recorded with
Colin Marston in the Pocono Mountains, the 37-minute
album takes the band's established sound into more
progressive and atmospheric territory while retaining
the weight and aggression of its earlier material.
Structured as a prologue and five chapters, Beneath the
Lunar Tyrant tells the story of a young hero drawn into
a struggle against the sorcerer Uldor. The story unfolds
through a world of ancient peoples, demigods, holy
warfare, and competing forces of faith and power. The
music develops alongside it, with recurring ideas,
long-form passages, and abrupt shifts between
atmosphere, dissonance, and violence tying the record
together.
Beneath the Lunar Tyrant is a natural progression from
Exalt and Despair: broader in scope, more deliberate in
its storytelling, and deeper in the world surrounding
it, while remaining unmistakably Selenoplexia.
