If you havenÆt heard of Yoko Kanno you will soon. As a composer and
artist, Yoko Kanno is definitely in a league of her own. With an
impressive list of credits stemming from her work on the Vision of
Escaflowne to Brain Powerd, Yoko Kanno breaks new ground with the
Cowboy Bebop - remixes soundtrack. Originally written by Yoko
Kanno, these songs have all been remixed by their respective
artists - yet the overall feel of the tracks has been maintained. A
departure from the majestic orchestration felt in Macross Plus
(also orchestrated by Kanno), Cowboy Bebop may get a little jazzy,
but Cowboy Bebop remixes gets jiggy. Although the Radio free mars
tracks get a little annoying at times, the opening tracks more than
make up for it. Tank!, the opening theme song for Cowboy Bebop,
gets revamped and remixed. The drum beats and snares help to create
a distinct sound for an already jazzed track. Fans of drummin' bass
should feel right at home. Information High, move over, Tank! -
its high energy sound should start getting some play when fans
crave a little energy boost during their rush hour drive. Cats on
Mars by the DMX Krew, (No not the Rough Ryders) brings a new sound
to anime music - think of a slowed down version of Whoop! There it
is, combined with the vocals of Gabriela Robin. Cats on Mars is
definitely comparable to KannoÆs work on Sharon Apple's Cream Puff
album. Although not on same club level as most of the Two-Mix
tracks, Cats on Mars will is able to find a midpoint between the
hip-hop instrumental with the sultry sound of Ms. Robin. YouÆll
either want to bob your head or tap your toes, but youÆll most
likely dance up a storm. While "Piano BlackÆs" new age instrumental
creates a mellow jazzy sound, CatÆs Blues sounds like something
you would hear on a Beatmania game. The use of the trumpets,
drums, and snares throughout the next few tracks helps to create an
atmosphere thatÆs completely in tune with the overall feel of the
Cowboy Bebop anime. Low-key in its style, yet visually captivating,
Cowboy remixes adds another dimension to an already
multi-dimensional musical departure by Ms. Kanno.
