Can there be anything more unrelentingly filthy sounding than
a Yellow Swans album? Very probably not, though this, more
than many outings by Pete Swanson and Gabriel Mindel Saloman,
goes someway towards tempering the torrent of filth they tend
to produce. These two lengthy pieces were recorded live on
tour at the end of last year and take their basis as a pool of
simmering drone and (almost) ambient noise. 'Descent 1' is
especially palatable, rising from a starting point of endless
guitar sustain, layer after layer of lo-fi dinscaping surges
from out of the sonic mire. You can even hear one or two
passages that would be deemed harmonically rather beautiful
creeping out. After a gradual escalation the piece blossoms
into a symphonic noise, arcing its way towards euphoric
heights. This continues until the piece reluctantly dies away
after almost twelve minutes. 'Descent 2' takes a slightly less
extreme dynamic, focussing more pointedly on the dissection of
hovering drone signals. Although this second piece lacks some
of the subtler qualities of the first, it nevertheless stirs
up plenty of doomy apprehension leading up to a blistering
climax. Fearsome.
