It never fails that when blues are executed with
precision, a burst of pure cool hits the air with
vengeance. Albert King must be just jamming along
with the sounds of this classic tribute by one who
needs no introduction, Corey Stevens. With Ruf
Records release of Albertville in 2007, it brings
blues front stage again. The string manipulation and
vocal blues magnetism of StevenÆs sets this release
apart from many others this season. Albertville is
blues in overdrive with a special artist igniting
the sounds of anotheràPure Cool!
As an artist/writer, Stevens has recorded numerous
originals which at times is the majorities
preference however there are always exceptions to
the mother rule. This project happens to be one of
the exceptions. So mom takes a back seat and rides
this welcome fever, breaking all the rules! Stevens
voice along with his string wizardry just makes
these King cuts become energized with the true Blues
feel. Heartfelt and driven, the efforts messages are
as fresh as they were back when King hit the stage.
The tribute not only goes to King but the performer
orchestrating this accolade!
Also if you have a chance, enjoy the tempo of skins
by Steve Ferrone, who keeps the pace of this project
right on line! One of the primary spins is ôI Get
Evil,ö which is such a powerful cut on this project.
It embraces the talents of StevensÆs guitar work and
the bonding of percussion. Also note Paul TestaÆs
organ work, which is very pronounced in this effort.
This is a pure blues ride.
