Release Notes:
Melody can be a dangerous thing, according to
GoodBooks.
However, the band's forthcoming album æControlÆ
manages to blend infectious melodies with strong
vocal harmonies to create perfect, alternative pop
music that sets them apart from the majority of
other bands around at the moment. With quirky synth
lines polishing the sublime vocals of lead singer
Max Cooke, GoodBooks most obvious influences include
Hot Chip, Mystery Jets and Kraftwerk. Not to get
confused with the similar band name Good Shoes,
GoodBooks mix electronic sounds with delicate
glockenspiel notes to sparse but perfect guitar
riffs. The Kent quartet show that there is life
beyond the dust-collecting cowbell of Larrikin Love.
GoodBooks may remind you of an early Athlete but on
tracks such as æBeautiful To WatchÆ, æThe IllnessÆ,
æAliceÆ and æLeniÆ the band show their refreshing
catchy pop tunes embody the current British music
scene at its most invigorating and stimulating. Not
only do GoodBooks stand tall among the new wave of
indie/electro bands but they stand with a future
before them. How long will it be before the masses
get fed up of wearing their neon paints and waving
their glow sticks to bands who are not quite The
Klaxons? Far beyond their years GoodBooks preview
their diversity, and show their maturity with tracks
such as æThe Curse of SaulÆ, æTurn It BackÆ and
future single æPasschendaeleÆ (pronounced
passion-dale), which looks at the broad concept of
war and conflict, and how we say we should never
repeat it, but we always do.
GoodBooksÆ style and substance are well ahead of the
chasing pack and every now and then there's just
something ever so slightly haunting about their
music; The story of a soldier in the First World War
who is killed, as is his son in the Second World War
shows that these are not only amazing pop songs but
beautiful indie for the thinkers with Max singing
ôHe fighted for the cause, in a war to end all
wars.ö
The album slows to an almost eventually halt with
the experimental æGood Life SalesmanÆ and æViolent
Man LovestongÆ, which is stripped down to piano and
electronic beats. However, the album is kicked back
into life by the Athlete-esque æThe Last DayÆ before
entering the almost spine chilling æWalk With MeÆ, a
song that would not sound out of place on any
Mystery Jet album. I say this because various
friends were invited to sing along on this track
including Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets), Cajun
Dance Party (another band to watch out for) and
Fields.
GoodBooks are one of the best new bands in Britain.
Their songs are fresh, chaotic but meticulously
executed to create a sound not only for the here and
now, but a sound for the future. Whether itÆs still
raining, or the sun finally decides to make an
appearance, make sure you take the time to add
æControlÆ to your life. Forget Big Brother, itÆs
time to lose yourself this summer with the brilliant
GoodBooks.
