Album Description
Extraordinarily concentrated music from the new, expanded ensemble
led by Norwegian pianist and composer Christian Wallumr?d, which
includes three new musicians alongside the long-serving Arve
Henriksen and Per Oddvar Johansen. Album includes a total of 24
tracks all composed or co-composed by Wallumr?d, with several of
the selections freely inspired by the Fantasias of Henry Purcell.
Other inspirational sources include baroque music generally, the
Norwegian psalm tradition, and music of Pakistan.
This is true ensemble music, uniquely nuanced, and as original and
evocative as Wallumrod's last ECM recording, 'A Year From Easter',
BBC Radio 3's Late Junction's Album of the Year in 2005 - and much
acclaimed in the UK press.
Personnel:
Christian Wallumr?d - (piano, harmonium, toy piano), Arve
Henriksen - (trumpet), Gjermund Larsen - (violin, Hardanger
fiddle, viola), Tanja Orning - (violoncello), Giovanna Pessi -
(baroque harp), Per Oddvar Johansen - (drums, percussion,
glockenspiel)
About the Artist
The Christian Wallumr?d Ensemble has emerged as a band worthy to
follow in the footsteps of Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal, fellow
Norwegian musicians that ECM put on the map over 35 years ago. The
new recording introduces three new string players, violinist
Gjermund Larsen from the Norwegian folk tradition, classical and
improvising cellist Tanja Orning, and Swiss baroque harpist
Giovanna Pessi.
The original band was formed with the aid of Manfred Eicher, who
brought the pianist/leader and his long-standing associates
Henriksen and Johansen together with Nils ?kland for the charming
'Sofienberg Variations' in 2003.
Trumpeter Arve Henriksen has emerged over the past five years as
an international star, regarded as perhaps Norway's most
outstanding young musician. Pianist Wallumr?d first appeared on
ECM 10 years ago ('No Birch'), and has also guested on saxophonist
Trygve Seim's 'The Source & Different Cikadas'
